Applying for a Uganda tourist visa is not the simplest thing I have ever done in my travels. I have always wanted to go to Uganda since 2008. I talk about this in my travel bucket list post. And somehow, after finishing my Dissertation for my Masters decided that I was going to go to Uganda, but of course, I needed a Ugandan visa.
So if you are looking for a step-by-step guide on how to apply for a Ugandan visa, then you have come to the right place. I will be sharing how to apply for a Uganda online visa with ease, because I honestly don’t think it should be as hard as it was for me. With a bit of preparation and the right information up front, you can avoid most of the stress I went through.

Uganda is well known as the Pearl of Africa. It’s a stunning destination filled with natural beauty, vibrant culture, and warm hospitality. It has gorilla trekking in Bwindi to the source of the Nile in Jinja; there’s a huge amount packed into a relatively small country. I thoroughly enjoyed my trip, but sorting out the visa process beforehand was a little tedious.
This by step-by-step guide to applying for a Uganda tourist visa is for UK, US, and Canadian travellers, and includes the documents and fees you need as well as official visa tips.
Step-by-step Guide to Applying For a Uganda Tourist Visa – What You’ll Need Before Applying
For you Uganda tourist visa please make sure you have the following ready:
- A valid passport (6+ months left)
- Yellow Fever Certificate
- Return or onward flight confirmation
- Passport-style photo (digital)
- Hotel booking or travel itinerary
- Access to a printer
- $50 USD for the Uganda tourist visa fee
You will need all of these if you are applying for a Uganda online visa. A quick note on the Yellow Fever Certificate, this isn’t optional. It’s a mandatory entry requirement, not just something for your tourist visa for Uganda application, so make sure you’ve had the vaccination with enough lead time before your trip for it to be valid, and that you bring the physical certificate with you.
Step 1: Apply Online (Use the Official Site!)
For your Ugandan tourist visa, you need to visit: https://visas.immigration.go.ug. I would actually avoid third-party websites when applying for any travel visas. While some of these sites are legitimate “visa assistance” services, they typically charge significant extra fees on top of the standard $50, and using the official government portal directly is cheaper, more transparent, and avoids any unnecessary admin burden or delays.
Step 2: Choose the Right Ugandan Visa
Once on the portal, go to:
- “Visa or Permit Application”
- Select Visa
- Choose Tourism
- Then choose Single Entry Visa (valid for up to 90 days)
If you’re also travelling to Kenya or Rwanda, you can apply for the East Africa Tourist Visa instead. It covers all three countries under one visa and currently costs $100. It also allows multiple re-entries between Uganda, Kenya, and Rwanda without the visa expiring, which is especially useful if your trip involves, say, gorilla trekking in Bwindi and then crossing into Rwanda’s Volcanoes National Park, or combining Uganda with a Kenyan safari. Just make sure you apply through the country you’re entering first. If you’re only visiting Uganda, the standard $50 single-entry tourist visa is the one you want.
Step 3: Upload Your Documents
You’ll need to upload:
- A digital copy of your passport
- Your Yellow Fever certificate
- Return/onward flight details
- Hotel booking or itinerary because they will ask for this
- Passport-style photo
File size tip: Resize files under 500KB using sites like ilovepdf.com or resizeimage.net. I personally used Canva to compress and adjust everything, which worked well and meant I didn’t have to mess around with multiple different tools.
Step 4: Complete the Application + Payment
- Fill in your personal details (please match it exactly with your passport)
- Upload your documents
- Pay the $50 USD visa fee with a credit/debit card
- Screenshot your payment confirmation just in case and print it out.
Step 5: Wait for Approval
- You’ll typically hear back within 2–5 working days
- If it takes longer, message @DCICUg on X (Twitter). They’re responsive and actually quite helpful!
It’s worth applying at least 10 days before your intended travel date, just to give yourself a buffer in case anything needs following up.
Once approved, you’ll receive:
- A Visa approval letter (PDF)
- A barcode or confirmation document
In some cases, you may be asked for a “top-up payment” if additional fees apply to your specific application. If this happens, you’ll need to complete that payment before your approval letter is issued, so keep an eye on your email and the portal status.
Step 6: Print Everything!
You’ll need physical copies of the following when entering Uganda:
- Visa approval letter
- Yellow Fever certificate
- Payment confirmation
- Any other uploaded documents
Don’t be like me. Please print everything in advance to avoid issues on arrival! I genuinely didn’t realise how much of this process still relies on physical paperwork at the border, and scrambling to find a printer at the airport is not how you want to start your trip.
