I often hear many people say, “You can’t solo travel in Africa.” And every time I hear it, I have the same question: why ever not? For me the Motherland and continent is the best to not only live in but to also travel. But I get it. Many people have made out that Africa is scary and many people just don’t know if they can solo travel in Africa.

You will constantly hear me go on about how Africa is not a country. It is a vast, diverse continent made up of 50+ countries, cultures, languages, and experiences. Like anywhere else in the world, solo travel in Africa depends on where you go, how you travel, and how informed you are.

And after living on the continent and travelling to over 15+ countries in Africa I am here to tell you that solo travel in Africa is not only possible, but it is actually liberating, grounding, and deeply empowering. Here are five African countries you can absolutely travel to solo, especially as a Black woman.

Cape Verde, Colourful, Calm & Perfect for Solo Vibes

Cape Verde is one of those places that instantly puts you at ease. With more than 10 islands, you will find that Sal, Cape Verde is a relaxed, colourful, and slow-paced island to visit. It’s so relaxed that I would say it is the best to solo travel in Africa. In Sal you can go walking along the coast, zip lining, enjoy live music in the evenings, a cooking class, or simply rest by the sea, Cape Verde is the kind of destination where you feel safe being alone without feeling lonely. It’s calm, welcoming, and perfect if you want a gentle introduction to solo travel in Africa.

Ghana, Incredible Food, Culture & the Kindest People

Ghana is often described as the gateway to Africa, and for good reason. I have been to Ghana twice, both for work but I have had some time to experience a little bit of leisure where I could. From the moment you arrive, there’s a warmth that’s hard to explain unless you’ve experienced it yourself. The food is incredible, the culture is rich, and people genuinely look out for you and are soo kind. Ghana is definitely a country you can solo travel in Africa with ease. People are especially kind to you if you’re travelling here to Ghana solo.

It’s easy to meet people, easy to get around with Uber, and deeply affirming to travel through a country that holds so much history, pride, and joy.

Tunisia, Affordable Underrated & So Beautiful

Tunisia is one of North Africa’s most underrated gems and is a must visit. I also came to Tunisia for work, but stayed a little longer to actually do some sightseeing and explore the beautiful sites.

What I found was that Tunisia, is super affordable, visually stunning, and offers a beautiful mix of history, coastline, desert, and food. For solo travellers, Tunisia is relatively easy to navigate, with welcoming locals and a slower pace outside of major tourist areas.

If you’re looking for something different from the usual European or Middle Eastern routes, Tunisia is a brilliant option.

Senegal, Culture, Languages and Wonjo

Senegal is one of those countries that quietly stays with you long after you leave. I still think about it even today after visiting almost 4 years later.

It has vibrant streets of Dakar to the slower pace of coastal towns like Ngor and Saint-Louis. Senegal offers solo travellers a beautiful mix of culture, history, and everyday life. The country feels deeply communal, and people are genuinely welcoming. You will need to learn a few words of French or Wolof.

It’s easy to navigate, rich in food and music, and perfect for solo travellers who want to feel connected rather than isolated while exploring.

Morocco, My Forever Second Home

Morocco holds a special place in my heart and between you and me, will continue to hold a special place in my heart. The country truly feels like my second home. And I think for solo travel in Africa Morocco is defenitely a country you can go solo. I would advise going out of the Marrakesh, which is where everyone goes. The variety within the country is unmatched, filled with bustling cities, quiet riads, mountains, deserts, coastlines. Once you understand how the country moves, Morocco becomes incredibly easy to navigate solo. You can also get trains, buses between cities.

Yes, it requires awareness and confidence (like many places around the world), but it rewards you with depth, beauty, and unforgettable experiences.

Kenya, Safaris the City Life & Unforgettable Views

Kenya offers the perfect balance between nature and city life. I travelled here this year solo for my birthday and absolutely loved it! Kenya is truly amazing, it has one of the worlds famous safaris. A vibrant city life in Nairobi and offers solo travellers the opportunity to experience wildlife, culture, and modern African life all in one trip. Yes of course you can travel solo in Africa. I always say that you can travel anywhere you want around the world solo with due diligence. Like anywhere else in the world, solo travel in Africa is about choosing the right destinations, doing a lot of research, travelling with awareness and always following your instincts. The idea that Africa is “unsafe” or “too difficult” to travel solo often comes from sheer ignorance, misinformation, fear, and lack of exposure. It is not the reality of travelling solo in Africa and it never will be.
