I like to think that most countries are great for solo travel, but I am aware that for many people that may not be the case. Solo travel in Europe comes up a lot as the most in conversations because of the awkward stares. The uncomfortable moments, or the perceptions of Black woman travelling solo. And I get it. Honestly I really do. So after travelling over 30+ countries solo here are some of the best European countries for Black travelers.
The stories we hear, the planning, the awkward stares we feel, or just not knowing where and what to eat can be draining. But I’m here to say this to you today. Not all countries are the same and that applies especially for Europe. From my many solo adventures I can honestly tell you that I know a few countries that you can solo travel in Europe. These European countries have made welcomed, safe, and able to truly enjoy my solo journey.

🇩🇪 Germany
Berlin was my first solo trip over 10 years ago. Yes when solo travel wasn’t as popular as it is now. I went for a solo day trip and I found it to be a very diverse, progressive, and culturally rich city. The locals I met were from all over the world, and I felt no different being a Black woman and solo. If you love street art, history, and maybe a German sausage with some chips (fries). 🇮🇪 Ireland
Dublin is an easy peasy lemon squeezy type of city to go to in Ireland (I would say it’s one of the best European countries for solo travel). And it’s affordable too. I visited Dublin on a day trip and if I remember rightly my flight only cost me £25! That’s cheaper than a bowl of Pasta in London (depending on where you go of course!) It’s a very easy city to navigate as there are buses into the city from the airport and there are so many sites to see.

🇲🇪 Montenegro
Oh my Montenegro is an absolute hidden gem ladies. It is honestly one of the most underrated countries in the Balkans. Montenegro surprised me with its natural beauty, laid-back vibes. The locals were so accommodating that I know I will be definitely going back again. The city that I visited Kotor has stunning beaches, mountains. I think I also loved that their were fewer tourists and even fewer stares. Maybe because it hasn’t been on many people’s raider. So I’m telling you that if you want a solo travel destination Montengro. It’s great for peaceful solo reflections and you don’t have to stay for long. 🇭🇷 Croatia
I found Croatia to be just stunning and fairly safe. From Dubrovnik’s coastal charm to Zagreb’s local café culture, I was able to explore solo comfortably. People were respectful, and I loved the mix of history and ocean views. It is definitely one of the best European countries to visit for Black travelers.

🇮🇹 Italy
Yes, Italy has had its moments (we’ve all heard the stories), and I’ve been one to share some of those stories. What I will say is this. Depending on where you go, solo travel in Italy can actually be incredible. I’ve been to a few cities in Italy, one solo, a few with family and friends. I’d recommend cities like Florence and Pisa, or Bologna over the extremely touristy Rome. That way you get to see another side of Italy that may surprise you. Honestly, the food, architecture, and pace of life? Chef’s kiss.

As a Black woman. I have to honestly say that solo travel in Europe gives you a unique lens. It can seem overwhelming at first, but it’s not a reason to stay home. And not go anywhere! I’ve just listed out 5 countries that I would have missed out on if I didn’t just pluck up the courage and go solo. And I’m sure there are many more other countries you can go solo.
The countries I have mentioned in this post all reminded me that joy, safety, and discovery still exist out there. Just choose wisely, trust your instincts, and travel with intention. And please don’t go around telling everyone you are travelling solo! You have to practise due diligence when solo travelling in Europe as a Black woman.
