Introducing Adebola of MyBreakingViews…

Tell us a bit about yourself and your blog.

I am MyBreakingViews and I love stating an opinion, so when it came to creating a blog I knew I would find it easy to talk about political issues that surround us as a society because it changes all the time. I also loooove travelling! I’ve done over 30 places around the world and I have sought to share that with people.

I recently started my YouTube channel also called MyBreakingViews (subscribe). I have a huge passion for helping people and letting everyone state their views. I believe in using MyBreakingViews as a platform for opinions to be shared!

When did you start blogging and what motivated you to start?

I originally started a blog three years ago on my travels as I did a study exchange in Singapore and travelled all over South East Asia. However I felt like this was common so decided to start a blog on political and social justice issues that I felt young people needed to know about.

I have since grown and realised there are so many other avenues that I could explore, like my faith (I’m a born again Christian), my travels and just my life.

How has your blog evolved since starting your blogging journey?

Oh wow. This is a question I had to really think about. I can definitely say I have grown as a person. I started on Blogger – I had no idea about blogging, editing or even like headers, footers, URL. I was lucky that my boyfriend at the time was a graphic designer and he did sort me out but then I stopped because I just felt like I wasn’t putting my all into it.

I now use WordPress and GoDaddy as my host, I actually spent money because I knew I would take it seriously once I payed up. I am so glad I made that decision. The support I have received has been amazing and I am constantly growing and learning new things everyday, trust me.

What has been the most challenging part about running a blog?

I would say the most challenging aspect of running a blog is staying consistent! It is so hard especially when it’s cold and life gets in the way. I just found myself making excuses because I didn’t know what to write.

I learnt the best way to keep on top of my writing was to write on my phone especially when I am constantly on the move. In fact this influenced me to start my YouTube channel because I knew I could share my opinions on another scale and widen my platform with another skill.

What’s your favourite post/s and why?

I love my posts on my very own political views but due to my area of work I have had to take a step back and find other ways to grow MyBreakingViews as a brand. I would say my fave posts now are about my travelling because I am sharing my own experiences.

Where do you see yourself and your blog in five years’ time?

This puts me on the spot! Where do I start? I have connected my blog with my YouTube channel and I hope to actually be able to use the two to talk about political issues and real life social issues that affect our community, I don’t what it to just be my views, I want it to be all of your views too.

In a nutshell, I want MyBreakingViews to become a social political platform, a news channel and a website to talk about travel, lifestyle, politics, makeup and ministry! Amen!

Do you have any bloggers you admire and follow yourself?

Yes I mean where do I start lol! I really love Christian bloggers like Wunms and also Shirley B because she helps me tap into my girly side.

Your blog centres around your personal opinions on politics as well as travel. Do you have any advice for bloggers who want to do something similar?

Yes, be you. Don’t be afraid to talk about your views! When I write about social political issues, I would sometimes think about what other people would think and it was only when someone set me straight and asked me what is MyBreakingViews. It is my view! When you have to say something, do not worry about what people think. It’s what you think, it’s is your own Breaking View!

In terms of travel, I say it in my posts – travel! Travel somewhere new every year and talk about your experiences because everyone’s experience is always different. Other than that stay consistent, enjoy the journey and enjoy the growth.

What are your hopes for the Black British Blogging community?

That we get bigger and greater. We have so much to say as black people and I absolutely live for it and love it! Black people face barriers on a day to day basis and I love when bloggers/YouTubers use their platforms to talk about these things.

It’s So Important To Visit/ Go Back Home

Happy New Month Everyone! Today I am going to talk about the importance of visiting or going back home!

I seem to be talking about Africa (well Nigeria) a lot lately, which I believe is not spoken about enough!

Africa is my motherland.

More specifically, Nigeria is my motherland and although I was born in Britain and many would say that I am British, I will always be a proud Nigerian. Africa is always overlooked as a travel destination why do you think that is?

If people do visit Africa it is normally countries like Morocco, Tanzania and South Africa. These countries, of course, I’m sure are amazing and whilst I have been to Morocco and the other destinations and are on my bucket list of countries to visit, it still bothers me that Africa is the world’s second-largest continent with 54 diverse countries, estimated to have over 1500 languages; it is still not visited compared to other continents in the world.

The top African countries for me to visit would have to be my motherland – Nigeria. I try to visit Nigeria at least every two years and in the last 6 years have kept to my promise. I think it is very important to go visit home, especially if you can go everywhere else around the world!

At a wedding in Nigeria 🙂

Home

I want to visit so many other countries in Africa because it bothers me that people think it’s not a place to visit.  I want people to see Africa through my views and see that Africa is a great travel destination to consider, to also dispel the stereotypes and misconceptions that many still believe. Yes, there is poverty in Africa, but there is also poverty in every continent in this world. There are so many great things in Africa, from the mix of modern and traditional, the amazing beauty of nature and the many diverse and inspiring cultures. Don’t miss out on all this greatness.

BE YOUR #1 FAN

Hello again, today I will be talking about being your number one fan!

I can’t believe how quickly this year is going already! So many people are building and creating new spaces, business ideas, vlogs, blogs, etc – and I think it’s great! But who is your biggest fan? Do you have any support from the people close to you? Do they even help promote your platform?

Heck, I expected to have a huge fan base of people to start sharing their views on political issues which affect them the most. It was only after a while that I realised how unrealistic I was being with myself.

It was then that I realised that I had to be my own number one fan!

Don’t get me wrong, my family (my auntie ‘Lola always proof reads my work – thank you auntie); and friends do share a lot of tips and support me, but I always expected more. I know many or a lot of my friends don’t read my blog posts, haven’t read or never plan to do so. It’s not a terrible thing but when some still ask me what I write about, it does raise concerns and gives clear indication that they haven’t even looked at the site – which of course, is disheartening! I am extremely passionate about what I write about; and when you or I expect to see other people share similar interest and they don’t seem to, you begin to question yourself “am I wasting my time”?

“I’m I making any impact”? “Should I just pull the plug now”?  I have been praying to God about my platform and have realised that I no longer want to be in a place that anxiously expects fans. I no longer have high expectations of my friends or family to share my content, like comment or support anything I’m doing with my space.

Don’t get me wrong, support from my close family and friends would be good but from now on I am my own fan – in fact I am my own biggest fan – and that’s exactly how it’s going to be from now on! I know now that I only get out of this as much as I put into it, so cheers to me being my own biggest fan! I want to leave you with some pointers to take on – which I’ve learnt from my own blogging and also from other people I’ve asked….

– Be Your Own Biggest Fan

Yes, your expectations for people to follow your business idea, blog or whatever it, is can still be quite high – which is a beautiful thing. Don’t bring it down – because I’ve always believed that it’s good to set for yourself high standards, dreams and expectations. There are in fact no limits in this world – other than the ones which we create for ourselves. So you should always boost yourself up.

 Stay Passionate

I have recently been asking lots of people for advice on their personal platforms, especially those that are doing well in the time scale that I have had my platform. One  important thing I learnt was that I needed to stop thinking about the views, followers and comments. I only have to make sure that my platform is crisp, looks good, adds value and most importantly shows my passion.

– Find your audience

I know you want your idea to touch people or have an impact, otherwise why would you be doing it? I understand. One of the things I was taught when I asked around was that I need fellow bloggers who discuss the same things as I do. Since then, I have made an effort to contact political, lifestyle and travel bloggers; followed groups etc. It gets exhausting I know but there is so much that you can do to get yourself out there. It depends on how much you want to excel and succeed.

The only approval you really need is God’s

This may sound slightly contradictory because I have earlier said ‘be your own biggest fan’. The Bible is explicit about the God’s Sprit lives in you. “You are therefore not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if in fact the Sprit of God dwells in you. Anyone whoever does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to Him”.

Romans 8:9  Now I know, right. It’s easy to get caught up only in the worldly things. It’s easy to fall astray and seek only the approval of man. However, I promise you that this can be your biggest downfall in anything you do in your life. Relying on people to be your fans and or seeking approval from them doesn’t matter if you haven’t sought it from God first. I speak to God regularly and when I write something, I always ask for His opinion and approval; trust that He approves of my work.

Final thoughts

Therefore seek God’s approval first; not man’s. ‘Am I now persuading men, or God? Or am I seeking to please men? If I were still pleasing men, I should not be a servant of Christ’. Galatians 1:10 I hope this post really encourages you to not only seek God but to also keep on encouraging yourself.

“Nor again is there anyone who loves or pursues or desires to obtain pain of itself, because it is pain, but because occasionally circumstances occur in which toil and pain can procure him some great pleasure. To take a trivial example, which of us ever undertakes laborious physical exercise, except to obtain some advantage from it?”

But who has any right to find fault with a man who chooses to enjoy a pleasure that has no annoying consequences, or one who avoids a pain that produces no resultant pleasure?
On the other hand, we denounce with righteous indignation and dislike men who are so beguiled and demoralized by the charms of pleasure of the moment, so blinded by desire, that they cannot foresee the pain and trouble that are bound to ensue; and equal blame belongs to those who fail in their duty through weakness of will, which is the same as saying through shrinking from toil and pain.

But in certain circumstances and owing to the claims of duty or the obligations of business it will frequently occur that pleasures have to be repudiated and annoyances accepted. The wise man therefore always holds in these matters to this principle of selection: he rejects pleasures to secure other greater pleasures, or else he endures pains to avoid worse pains.

Unnecessary bars and buttons have been removed. And in taking away design elements that don’t add value, suddenly there’s greater focus on what matters most: your content.
