Introduction

A cheeky autumn escape to Luxembourg was calling me, and for a £29.89 return flight I just couldn’t resist. Although Luxembourg was super short and sweet it was totally worth it.

I had always known about Luxembourg, but just hadn’t managed to get around to visiting. However, I’ve been wanting to visit more countries that speak French so that I can practise my French, and well an autumn in Luxembourg gave me just that. I was surprised to see that it was such a diverse country with people from all parts of the world.

Transport in Luxembourg is completely free. Yep, completely free, no card, no tickets, nothing. And that is for trams, trains, and buses! You can easily get from the airport to the city centre for FREE!

Anyways, things changed for me this weekend when I was able to visit and do 48 hours in Luxembourg for a couple of nights and explore the country’s local food, beautiful sights, and even its free public transport system.

Luxembourg is great to visit all year round, but something about going and doing it in autumn made it even more special for me. I think it was the colourful leaves, soft greenery, parks, and grey-toned houses all came together to create such a calm and cosy vibe.

Fun fact: Did you know Luxembourg has one of the highest numbers of Michelin-star restaurants per capita in the world? For such a small country, the food scene is seriously impressive. And of course I was here to try all the food!

Here’s a quick autumn in Luxembourg guide on how I did 48 hours in Luxembourg city, which worked out around 2 days in Luxembourg. You will get what you can do where to stay, what to eat, where to go and much more.

About Luxembourg

Luxembourg is officially known as the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg. This landlocked country in Western Europe is bordered by Belgium to the west and north, Germany to the east, and France to the south. Which are easy countries to visit if you are going to Luxembourg.

Interestingly, Luxembourg is one of the few countries whose capital city shares the same name just like Singapore or Monaco. The culture, the people, and the languages are heavily influenced by both France and Germany. However, I found that most locals spoke really good English, and I was even able to practise my French. Luxembourg is pretty small so I would say you can easily do a day in Luxembourg if you are slow for time.

As Luxembourg is part of the Schengen Area, you can travel visa-free for up to 90 days within 180 days. However, as of 7 October 2025, visitors from non-EU countries (like the UK) are now required to provide biometric data on arrival, which I had to do when I landed. Worth noting that Card payments are widely accepted, and plugs are the standard European two-pin type. If you’re visiting from the UK, don’t forget to pack or buy a two-pin travel adaptor before you go. You can buy yours here.

An Autumn Escape to Luxembourg Itinerary

Below is how I did my trip. Of course, you can stay longer and do different activities.

Day 1 (Arrival): You can arrive in the afternoon. Once you have checked into your hotel, I stayed at Hotel Perrin, a charming boutique hotel that’s very central and walkable to most attractions. You can book the same hotel here.

Take a short tram or stroll to Chocolate House by Nathalie Bonn, one of Luxembourg’s most famous cafés. They’re best known for their “Hot Chocolate Spoons”. This is a thick chocolate blocks that melt slowly into hot milk. And there is a range of flavours! I also got their pistachio cake, which is just as decadent as it sounds. It’s the perfect first stop to ease into your trip and get a taste of Luxembourg’s cosy autumn charm.

If you’re only in town for the day, head straight into the city it’s small, clean, and easy to navigate with Google Maps.

Day 2 (Exploring & Food Tour): Join a local food tour, where you’ll get to try:

  • Rieslings Paschtéit (a Luxembourgish meat pie with white jelly)
  • Local ham with a glass of Luxembourg crémants
  • Kniddelen (soft dumplings)
  •  Hot chocolate and sweets in a Luxembourgish chocolaterie
  • Luxembourgish sausage with cream sauce and smoked bacon
  • Quiche and other regional favourites

It’s the perfect way to discover the city through its food while learning a bit about its history and culinary culture. You can book the exact same tour here.

Day 3 (Fine Dining & Return Home): You can take a slow morning walk around the Chemin de la Corniche, which is nicknamed “the most beautiful balcony in Europe”, and it truly is stunning. Go and see the Notre-Dame Cathedral and the Grands Boulevards district. If you are around on a Wednesday or Saturday, Place de Guelian food market is great for foodies.

I ended my trip with an early dinner at L’Atelier Windsor, a Michelin-starred restaurant that completely lived up to the hype beautifully plated dishes, elegant service, and perfect food. I ordered the ‘Le Poisson Nobel du Moment’ and for dessert they did an upside-down tart, with fresh cream.
