Tunisia is a country located in Northern Africa along the Mediterranean Sea, sharing borders with countries like Algeria and Libya. From Morocco, the flight took around 3 hours to fly and from the UK the flight is around 2 hours and 43 mins for a direct flight.
Tunis is the capital city and sits in the northeast and instantly won me over with its charm, incredible couscous, and the best homemade lemonade I’ve ever had no exaggeration! I ended up taking two 1-litre bottles back with me to Morocco.
Entry Requirements for Tunisia
If you hold a British, Canadian, or American passport, you don’t need a visa for short stays in Tunisia. The stay is typically up to 90 days. - Internet: You’ll definitely want internet while exploring the city. I usually use **Airalo for an eSIM**, which allow you to get mobile data as soon as you land.
- Travel Insurance: I recommend anyone travelling should have travel insurance which you can get via SafetyWing here.
- Payments: Most places in Tunisia accept card payments, so you rarely need to carry much cash.
The BEST Things to do in Tunisia
There are many activities in Tunisia especially things to in the capital Tunis, Tunisia (as many people think there isn’t a lot of things to do in the capital.
1. Explore the Medina of Tunis
One of the best things to do in Tunisia is to visit the Medina of Tunis which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is one of the most atmospheric places I’ve walked through. At the Medina you will find arrow alleys, handmade carpets, pottery, spices and souvenirs at every turn.
2. Visit Carthage
Another cool activity to do in Tunisia is the ancient ruins of one of history’s most powerful empires sitting just outside the capital. An easy day trip from Tunis and absolutely worth it for history lovers.
3. Sidi Bou Said
The iconic blue and white village perched above the sea. Sit down with a mint tea with pine nuts, watch the sunset.
4. Taste Traditional Tunisian Food
This alone is worth the trip. Start with Brik a crispy pastry filled with egg and tuna that sounds simple but is absolutely delicious. Then you should move on to couscous with lamb or fish and finish with makroud, a sweet semolina pastry with dates. And don’t leave out the traditional Tunisian lemonade. 5. Bardo Museum
One of the finest activities in Tunisia is the museums in North Africa which are unfortunately criminally under visited. The Roman mosaics alone are worth the trip and the scale and detail is truly breathtaking.
6. Hammamet
A coastal town that does everything well is the beaches. The beaches in Tunisia are just stunning and with a beautiful medina and a lively nightlife scene. A Hammaet would be perfect for unwinding after a few days of sightseeing.
7. El Jem Amphitheatre
One of the best preserved Roman amphitheatres in the entire world, and far less crowded than the Colosseum in Rome. If you’ve already been to Rome and thought the Colosseum was impressive, El Jem will genuinely show you the next best thing!
8. Kairouan
A sacred Islamic city and UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Great Mosque of Kairouan is one of the most breathtaking buildings I’ve ever stood inside. The city is also known for its handmade carpets and incredibly sweet pastries.
9. The Sahara Desert
No trip to Tunisia is complete without this. Take a camel trek, jump in a 4×4 for a desert safari or stay overnight in a camp under the stars. Oh and fun fact several scenes from Star Wars were filmed right here in this desert.
10. Experience a Traditional Hammam
The perfect way to end a day of exploring. Affordable, deeply relaxing and a genuinely authentic part of Tunisian culture that you won’t find anywhere else quite like this.
