Who doesn’t love the idea of afternoon tea? How about an afternoon tea with a London City Cruise with an amazing view of the city?
I recently had the pleasure of enjoying an Afternoon Tea Cruise with City Cruises, and let me tell you, it was a real treat. As someone who grew up in London partially, I can honestly say seeing my city from the water felt magical. Let’s start with the main event afternoon tea!
As soon as we boarded, we were shown to our table, which felt secure and well-spaced for comfort. Staff were welcoming and offered tea and coffee almost immediately, which was unlimited by the way, setting the tone for a relaxing afternoon.
We were also given:
- Sandwiches: Freshly made with classics like smoked salmon, chicken, egg mayo, and ploughman (my fave).
- Scones: Served warm with clotted cream and strawberry jam. I could have eaten three more!
- Sweet treats: Mini pastries and macarons added that perfect touch of indulgence to the cruise.
Tea and coffee are unlimited, but my friend convinced me to add a glass of prosecco. I have zero regrets. It made the afternoon feel that little bit more special and, of course, perfect for photos.
The Cruise Experience
Our cruise departed at 3:30 p.m. sharp, with boarding starting around 3:15. I met with a good friend of mine at 2.45 pm so we could be early enough to find where we needed to board. It’s always good to be punctual, and this was spot on.
The boat glided out onto the Thames, and as the London skyline unfolded, I had a little “wow, my city is beautiful” moment. From the water, familiar landmarks feel different almost more dramatic.
Here’s what we saw along the way:
- Tower Bridge – Stunning from below, especially as boats pass through.
- The Shard – Towering above the city like a sleek glass spear.
- The London Eye & Southbank – Full of life, buskers, and riverside charm.
- Shakespeare’s Globe & St Paul’s Cathedral – A beautiful contrast of old and new London.
- The Houses of Parliament & Big Ben – Iconic, and even better with the gentle river breeze.
There was also light commentary throughout the cruise, giving little nuggets of London history. It wasn’t overwhelming, which I liked it allowed for conversation and enjoying the views without feeling like a classroom trip.

- Book Early: Afternoon Tea Cruises are popular, especially in summer and around Christmas. Weekends and holiday periods sell out first.
- Arrive at Least 30 Minutes Before Boarding: London piers can be busy, and the boat leaves on time. You don’t want to be that person running down the pier with a scone in hand!
- Upgrade for Prosecco or Champagne: Trust me, it makes the experience feel extra special and looks great in photos.
- Pick Your Seat Wisely: Window seats are lovely for photos, but if you want to explore outside, it’s easy to step onto the deck after tea.
- Check the Weather: The cruise is enjoyable year-round, but a sunny day makes the outside deck magical. In winter, bring a coat for when you pop outside for pictures.
- Plan Your Day Around It: The cruise is 1.5 hours, so you can combine it with Tower of London, Borough Market, or a Southbank walk before or after.
Atmosphere and Vibes
What I loved most was the relaxing atmosphere. London can be hectic, but from the water, it feels calm and almost romantic. The sunlight glimmered on the Thames, tourists waved from the bridges, and the boat had a quiet hum of laughter and clinking teacups.
After finishing our tea and prosecco, we went out to the deck. The fresh breeze and open-air views were the highlight. Seeing Tower Bridge and the Shard with the river stretching ahead of you is something photos just don’t capture.
Conclusion
For £37 per person, this was such a worthwhile London experience. It combines:
- A classic British tradition (afternoon tea)
- Scenic sightseeing without the crowds
- Relaxed vibes perfect for photos and conversation
I’d absolutely do it again and next time maybe for a birthday treat or even a solo day out for a mindful afternoon in my home city, London.
