When people think of Sweden, their minds often go straight to Stockholm or Gothenburg. It actually makes sense, to be honest. But today I want to introduce you to the southern coast, a quieter gem called Arild. This small harbour town feels like you are stepping into a postcard.
I travelled here to celebrate the intimate wedding of a close friend of mine. Their ceremony was small, heartfelt, and beautiful. The weekend brought people and friends from across the world, where we all met in Singapore. It felt like a mini reunion seeing everyone again.
Harbour Views and Coastal Charm
The first thing I noticed about Arild was its beautiful harbour. Boats were bobbing gently on the water, framed by rows of traditional Swedish houses perched on the hillside. It’s the sort of place where you can slow down, take a deep breath, and just enjoy the simplicity of being by the sea.
I spent time walking along the waterfront, watching locals set off on fishing trips and families enjoying the summer air. There’s something grounding about small towns like this. For me, the town reminded me that travel doesn’t always have to be fast-paced or packed with activities. Sometimes it’s enough to just be still.
Where to Stay in Arild
Arild may be a small town, but it has some lovely, accommodating options. We stayed at Hotel Rusthållargården, which is a perfect hotel to stay at. And if you want something classic and cosy, Strand Hotell offers a beautiful spot right by the water. Both are great choices for a peaceful stay where you can wake up to sea views and quiet mornings. Food and Local Tastes
Like much of Sweden, the food in this part of the country leans towards fresh, simple, and wholesome. There are seafood dishes straight from the harbour, paired with classic Swedish touches like crispbread and dill.
Day Trips from Arild
One of the best things about visiting Arild is how close it is to other beautiful spots in southern Sweden. Kullaberg Nature Reserve is nearby, offering stunning coastal hikes and dramatic cliffs. If you’re in the mood for a city break, Helsingborg isn’t far either, which I think is also stunning. It has castle ruins, shops, and ferry connections. And with Copenhagen only a couple of hours away, you can easily extend your trip across the Øresund Bridge.
Plan Your Trip to Arild, Sweden
- Best time to visit: Summer (June–August) for the warmest weather and lively harbour.
- Getting there: I actually travelled to Arild from Copenhagen, Denmark, which turned out to be the easiest route. From Copenhagen, you can cross the Øresund Bridge into Sweden and then continue by car or train. It’s about a 1.5-2 hour journey, making Arild a perfect side trip if you’re already visiting Copenhagen. If you’re travelling from Sweden itself, Arild is around 30 minutes from Helsingborg or about an hour from Malmö. You can book your train ticket here.

Arild might not be the most famous destination in Sweden, but that’s exactly what makes it special. For me, it will always be tied to memories of friendship, love, and new beginnings. Whether you’re there for a celebration or just to slow down, this harbour town shows you a softer side of Sweden that’s worth seeking out.
Sometimes travel isn’t about ticking off big city landmarks, it’s about the small harbours like Arild. You know where they have the hidden corners that stay with you long after you’ve left. For me, Arild was one of those places.
