Looking for a Doha Layover Guide? Then you have come to the right place. I recently had an 18-hour stopover in Qatar after my trip to India. And while Hamad International Airport is practically a luxury experience on its own. I didn’t want to spend the whole day in an airport.
Instead, I decided to pre-book a tour and get out, explore, and make the most of my time in this unique country.
One of the most fascinating things I learnt while in Doha? The vast majority of Qatar’s population are expats or migrant workers, which you will see when you are there. The Qatari citizens make up only a small portion of the population that also receives a monthly stipend from the state. I thought that was super fascinating. What do you think?

Doha Layover Entry Requirements and Travel Tips
Qatar has made layovers incredibly easy for many travellers.
- Visa: UK, US, and Canadian passport holders can get a free visa on arrival, which makes things seamless. I will always say in all my guides. Always double-check entry requirements here before your trip.
- Currency: The local currency is the Qatari Riyal (QAR). I used a card for most purchases (like food and souvenirs), but having a little cash is useful for taxis or traditional markets.
- Dress Code: Qatar is a conservative country. While it’s quite modern in many ways, I recommend keeping your shoulders and knees covered, especially in mosques or public spaces. I’d just come from India and had the perfect wardrobe of flowy, modest dresses.
- Transport: Uber is reliable and widely available. The Doha Metro is also fast, clean, and very affordable. If you’re short on time, pre-booking a tour (like I did) is the most efficient way to see the city.
What I Did During my Doha Layover
Since I flew with Qatar Airways, I took advantage of their Transit Tour offering and booked the Discover Doha Tour with Discover Qatar.
It’s an excellent option if you have 5–12 hours to spare between your connecting flight. Highlights from the tour included:
- A scenic drive along the Corniche with views of the skyline
- A stop at the Dhow Harbour, where traditional wooden boats line the water
- A quick walk through Souq Waqif, one of Doha’s oldest marketplaces
- A visit to the Museum of Islamic Art (from the outside)
- Glimpses of Katara Cultural Village and the Pearl-Qatar
The tour was smooth, well-organised, and perfect for a short stopover. It included airport pick-up and drop-off, air-conditioned travel, and a very knowledgeable guide.

Tips for a Doha Layover
A few quick tips based on my experience:
- Download Airalo: I used Airalo to get an e-SIM with data. It’s super easy, and no need to rely on airport WiFi. Use my code ADEBOL5279 for a discount.
- Keep Time in Mind: Airport security can be busy, so always return with enough buffer time before your flight. The tour drops you off with plenty of time, but factor in an hour or so for immigration and boarding.
- Stay Hydrated: Doha can get hot! Keep water with you, especially if you’re exploring outdoors.
Final Views on my Doha Layover
Even though I only got to be in Doha for the day, the city left an impression on me. From its sleek skyline and cultural depth to the warmth of the people, I felt I’d only scratched the surface.
Next time, I’d love to stay longer, dive deeper into the food scene (I didn’t get to try much this time!). I only had a chicken shawarma wrap, which just doesn’t cut it for me.
